Architectural Photography

 An example of Heritage Architecture.
Photograph "Vlad" by Nicholas Robidoux

“Vlad” is more then just a photo, it is an idea and much like any idea it consists of parts. Vlad can be broken down into three photographic elements: Perspective, Light & Shadow, and finally detail. All of these elements important for different reason but all simply means to the same end.

Out of all the parts the perspective is the most obvious. For this work the perspective was taken at a lower angle to express the dominance and presence of the building. The perspective that was used was meant to pronounce the height of the building in relation to the rest of the area.

The second of Vlads characteristics is the play of light & shadow. When light & shadow is normally used it’s more prominent and noticeable. Vlads usage of light & shadow is minor, and it’s meant to be. Vlads light & shadow is meant to draw the viewers attention from the bottom up. It draws their eyes up to the light.

Vlads final characteristic is detail. The use of detail is different from the conventional kind. The use of detail can be seen in the rocky bottom parts of the photo. It’s meant to express the gritty and rough texture of this old building, unlike newer fresher buildings that are smooth.

The idea complete and thus Vlad is born. Through the usage of perspective, light & shadow, and detail the idea of Vlad is created. Vlad is a proclamation of on the beauty of old buildings. Vlad is more then just a photo Vlad is an idea. It is for this reason that the work was named Vlad, by giving it a “identity” instead of just a name, it has given the idea not only presence, but life.

An example of Man interacting with architecture.
Photograph "The Dreamer's Path" by Nicholas Robidoux.

I went on a magical adventure through the hallowed streets of downtown Kingston. While there I saw the majesty of architecture. During this trip I captured many moments, but the moment I most enjoyed was one I called "The Dreamer's Path". This photo was taken behind the historic Grand Theatre and was meant to be used as my "Man and Architecture" themed photo. This photo contains three architectural photo techniques: Texture, Contrast, and Symbolism.

Symbolism is a major element in this image. It's a metaphor of the struggle one goes through to keep their dreams. To explain, Scott (The Model in the picture) has the aspiration to become an actor. In the image the path behind him represents his journey to his dream. Much like the path, his journey is a basic one with it's share of hardships, the closed doors representing the false paths he must avoid. The simplicity of this path is meant to contrast the opposite path. The path in front of Scott represent the journey after obtaining his dream. Much like the path, keeping his dream of acting is a challenging task, filled with danger, uncertainty, and sometimes sadness. In comparison this shows use that although his path to obtain his dream is a hard and long one it is nothing compared to the struggle and hardship of keeping this dream, but that's where the sign comes in. The sign being a friendly yellow colour is a symbol, a symbol that at the end of his long arduous journey there is happiness. At the end of his journey if he pushes through the hardship and fights on, he will gain ultimate happiness and sense of accomplishment.
Texture, Contrast, and Symbolism. The three bases of this moment, with these this mere image becomes an insight into the soul. The Soul of the dreamer, the actor, the individual. With this image, even if you have never met him, you to can walk along side this man, on the Dreamer's Path.
